If you are in the market for a new car, the compact car segment is truly heating up. Once the base segment for all car models, compacts look downright large when put side by side with subcompact and especially mini car models. Indeed, some compacts are quite roomy on the inside and offer near midsize sedan room despite the small frame. We shall take a look at five compact 2013 model year cars that offer top of the line fuel efficiency.
Volkswagen Jetta -- Of the five models featured here, only the Jetta is powered by a diesel engine. That 2.0-liter engine helps the Jetta get 42 miles per gallon on the highway, tied only by the Cruze Eco. The advantage of the Jetta over its competitors is its torque, the power you need when you are on the highway and you step on the gas.
Chevy Cruze Eco -- This special edition Cruze has been tied for the segment lead since this model replaced the Cobalt in 2010. This model is powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged four and is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission, to achieve 42 mpg on the highway.
Dodge Dart Aero -- Released in fall 2012, the Dart Aero is the latest model for this all-new compact sedan. Powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged four and paired with a 6-speed manual transmission, the Dart Aero achieves 41 mpg on the highway. This model is also available with a 6-speed shiftable automatic transmission that gets 40 mpg highway.
Hyundai Elantra Blue -- There isn't anything blue about the Elantra, save for its model name. This vehicle gets 40 mpg on the highway and is powered by a 1.8-liter four paired with 6-speed automatic or manual transmission. For a similar model, consider the Kia Forte Eco.
Ford Focus SFE -- The Focus has the largest gasoline engine of the crowd, but still manages to hit 40 mpg on the highway. SFE stands for super fuel economy and this compact does it with a 2.0-liter four paired with a 6-speed shiftable automatic transmission. Imagine what this car could do if it was outfitted with a smaller engine.
